Product Description
You have a fulfilling job, a great group of friends, the perfect apartment, and no shortage of dates. So what if you haven't found The One just yet. Surely he'll come along, right?

But what if he doesn't? Or even worse, what if he already has, but you just didn't realize it?

Suddenly finding herself forty and single, Lori Gottlieb said the unthinkable in her March 2008 article in The Atlantic: Maybe she and single women everywhere, needed to stop chasing the elusive Prince Charming and instead go for Mr. Good Enough.

Looking at her friends' happy marriages to good enough guys who happen to be excellent husbands and fathers, Gottlieb declared it time to reevaluate what we really need in a partner. Her ideas created a firestorm of controversy from outlets like the Today show to The Washington Post, which wrote, "Given the perennial shortage of perfect men, Gottlieb's probably got a point," to Newsweek and NPR, which declared, "Lori Gottlieb didn't want to take her mother's advice to be less picky, but now that she's turned forty, she wonders if her mother is right." Women all over the world were talking. But while many people agreed that they should have more realistic expectations, what did that actually mean out in the real world, where Gottlieb and women like her were inexorably drawn to their "type"?

That's where Marry Him comes in.

By looking at everything from culture to biology, in Marry Him Gottlieb frankly explores the dilemma that so many women today seem to face--how to reconcile the strong desire for a husband and family with a list of must-haves so long and complicated that many great guys get rejected out of the gate. Here Gottlieb shares her own journey in the quest for romantic fulfillment, and in the process gets wise guidance and surprising insights from marital researchers, matchmakers, dating coaches, behavioral economists, neuropsychologists, sociologists, couples therapists, divorce lawyers, and clergy--as well as single and married men and women, ranging in age from their twenties to their sixties.

Marry Him is an eye-opening, often funny, sometimes painful, and always truthful in-depth examination of the modern dating landscape, and ultimately, a provocative wake- up call about getting real about Mr. Right.

Reviews Marry Him: The Case for Settling for Mr. Good Enough (Hardcover)

it's been one of the most interesting books on relationships and dating I've ever read. And I read a lot of these books! The interviews on TV don't do this book justice, because they skim the surface and miss the bigger point. It is brilliantly written. What a funny, fine, and insightful voice she has.
And here it is: A decent looking and pleasant enough woman in her 20s who is looking for a guy has the pick of the crop. If she's willing to say yes to dating, there are men who will fawn all over her, and many men will propose marriage. Even up to the mid 30s, there are many men eager to take it to the next level. But women are so used to being able to pick and choose, that they keep noticing the things that are wrong in guys, and expect that with each trade in they'll upgrade. That works, but only for a while. At a certain age, it stops working, but most women don't notice the change in the "game", and keep waiting--saying "I didn't pass up all those other guys just to settle now." They forget that the guys who used to be gaga over them were willing to forgive _their_ faults. By the time they enter their fourth decade, women ask: Why aren't there any "good guys" left? Because the women who were smart enough to focus on what they have in a particular man (rather than wait for the complete package) didn't let him go. They married him!
Any woman at any age would benefit from reading this book, but it is a must read for any woman who is between the ages of 24 and 34.

Reviews Game Change

Obama comes off every bit as stage-crafted and stage-managed as Ronald Reagan ever was. Heilemann and Halperin aptly capture the duality of his persona; on the stump Obama is well spoken, on message, cool, calm, and collected. Off the stump he is profane, prone to quick flashes of anger, and at times tentative and uncertain. Hillary Clinton comes off pretty much as was covered in the press at the time, but what IS news is her unsurprisingly blunt comment to Obama that she "cannot control her husband". Bill Clinton gets almost as much print here for his wildly inappropriate comments on the stump and in private about Candidate Obama and it's clear to see that what undid Hillary wasn't her efforts, but those of her husband. We get the clearest glimpse into Obama's hard sell when he talks Hillary Clinton into ending her campaign and into becoming Secretary of State as well.

"Game Change" answers many of the questions you had about the campaign, but which were never answered, like Rudy Giuliani's foolish all-or-nothing gamble on the Florida Primary and why he truly got out of the race, the Democratic conclave that prodded then-Senator Obama into the race in the first place, and so much more. Reading "Game Change" is like reliving the campaign all over again, but THIS time with the insider knowledge of details that were omitted by the campaigns and the press. If anything this will not only enlighten you but enrage you, as the media and the press clearly are NOT doing their jobs at all. All of this SHOULD have made it's way into the news during the campaign and yet it didn't. Truth is stranger than fiction, and with truth written this well, who needs fiction?

Reviews Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association

Material has been streamlined to reflect more of the electronic resources currently being used and the more obscure material has been consolidated. The newly added chapters on ethics, the publication process and journal article reporting standards are quite helpful. Some reviewers complained about the elimination of the chapters on writing for publication. Since each journal has it's own specific criteria for manuscript submission, I don't consider this a huge loss. Still has lots of sample for various references (and even includes video blog sources like you-tube) and information on how to display data results (Including radiologic and imaging data like MRI images)

Given all the emotional responses around the mistakes in the new edition, I was worried about ordering my copy. However, it just arrived, and as promised, it's the corrected version (the second printing) of the 6th edition. The changes to the style included in the manual are an improvement, particularly in the way electronic resources are cited. Additionally, the organization of this edition is better. Overall, I'm pleased.

In Defense of Food An Eaters Manifesto

In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto (Paperback)

Authors Michael Pollan

>> more details..

Product Description
Food is the one thing that Americans hate to love and, as it turns out, love to hate. What we want to eat has been ousted by the notion of what we should eat, and it's at this nexus of hunger and hang-up that Michael Pollan poses his most salient question: where is the food in our food? What follows in In Defense of Food is a series of wonderfully clear and thoughtful answers that help us omnivores navigate the nutritional minefield that's come to typify our food culture. Many processed foods vie for a spot in our grocery baskets, claiming to lower cholesterol, weight, glucose levels, you name it. Yet Pollan shows that these convenient "healthy" alternatives to whole foods are appallingly inconvenient: our health has a nation has only deteriorated since we started exiling carbs, fats--even fruits--from our daily meals. His razor-sharp analysis of the American diet (as well as its architects and its detractors) offers an inspiring glimpse of what it would be like if we could (a la Humpty Dumpty) put our food back together again and reconsider what it means to eat well. In a season filled with rallying cries to lose weight and be healthy, Pollan's call to action—"Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants."--is a program I actually want to follow. --Anne Bartholomew

Reviews In Defense of Food An Eater's Manifesto

Practical, insightful and really instructive. Pollan should be on a national FDA board to help curtail wreckless diet practices perpetuated by the government, communities, corporations, and individuals. We have forgotten where we came from in the world and this book along with Omnivores Dilemma go a long way toward putting the American diet back on track. Awesome recital of food facts, environmental issues, and dietary history of the contemporary American diet.

Was debating on this book or "Food Rules" however read this one first and am starting on the other. For the scientific searching mind, this book will give you all that you will ever need to know about the theory, history and science of food and for the simple layman just wanting to know what, when, how and why they should change their eating habits, the words became a little too technical and I kept reaching for the end for the answers to my questions. Facts are very beneficial but just needing the "bottom line", I then reached for "Food Rules" and am finding just what I need by focusing on how all this relates to my daily life and practices by getting off the Western Diet. As the author said "Food Rules" is a radically pared-down book and am looking forward to it. In the meantime, I am not sorry about reading "In Defense of Food" and might venture into again some day when I feel I need a dose of scientific intelligence.
