Product Description
This book is a master course that culminates in the showstopping cakes for which Carlo’s Bake Shop is famous. Following the arc of Buddy’s career from apprentice to master baker, Baking with the Cake Boss offers readers the same on-the-job education earned by everyone who comes to work at Carlo’s Bake Shop, with some of Buddy’s and the family’s memories shared along the way. It builds organically from simple cookies and pastries to pies, flower-adorned cupcakes, and basic fondant cakes, to breathtaking cakes for every holiday and special occasion. A baker’s development doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a painstaking thing. Even if you have raw talent, you have to nurture it, develop it. You have to patiently back up instinct and intuition with craft and, most of all, practice. Because in baking, practice doesn’t just make perfect. Practice also lets you move on to the next level, the next challenge, the next thing to be mastered.

Learning to bake is like learning to speak. You pick up that first word, even if you pronounce it imperfectly, and then pretty soon you learn another, and then another. You might not be able to say every word as clearly as a network anchorman, or put words together into sentences, but even as a kid you know that’s where you’re headed, to a place where you can string words into sentences, sentences into paragraphs, paragraphs into anything you want—an essay, a story, a memoir—if you put in the time to get good at each of the component parts.

I like the section on mt everest. i'm dissapointed that
it don't have many of the records i remember reading as a kid. i suggest it have an appendage listing
all the records title only then we can go to the website to get details. but how can we go to the website unless we know what we're looking for? If that's what you are looking for, look elsewhere. This book is intended as entertainment. It is colorful, picture-filled and fun to read. My 9-year-old son absolutely loves this series and has collected all the previous editions going back to 2004.

Diplomacy and Diamonds My Wars from the Ballroom to the Battlefield

Diplomacy and Diamonds: My Wars from the Ballroom to the Battlefield

Authors Joanne King Herring

>> more details..

Product Description
She's been dirt poor; she's been filthy rich. Rich was more fun. She married three times, divorced twice, found her true love, and lost him to cancer. At twenty-one, she was told she would soon die. She lived. Doctors said she'd never be able to have children. She had 'em. She's bargained with God, dictators, and Democrats. She's partied with princes, presidents, premiers, Barbara Walters, Anwar Sadat, Margaret Thatcher, Tom Hanks, and Francisco Franco . . . though not all at the same time. She captivated powerful men with her feminine charm, and then persuaded them toward unlikely political alliances through her formidable intelligence. She waltzed with Prince Philip in Buckingham Palace, dressed in men's clothes and smuggled herself in a barrel across the Pakistani border, threw a Roman-themed party so extravagant it was featured in Life magazine, and survived a Soviet gunship attack in the mountains of Afghanistan.

Joanne Johnson King Herring Davis hosted The Joanne King Show on television for 15 years. She served as honorary consul to both Pakistan and Morocco for ten years, has been knighted by the King of Belgium, and received the Quaid-e-Azam award, the highest honor given by the nation of Pakistan. She is also the recipient of the Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge Award. She has served on the boards of directors for UNICEF, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., LTV, Henredon Furniture, the Lindbergh Fund, and was co-chairman of the Special Olympics, with Henry Kissinger, in New York City.

Joanne lived in a world few get to experience and yet this lovely gem of a book gives the reader intimate details of her life; her motives, thoughts, aspirations, defeats, and successes. She is also a hoot. I'm buying all of the women in my life a copy. This book is a great read and offers (among other things) the background and realities concerning Afghanistan. You'll also enjoy a lot of laughter and tears along the way as you get to know more about Joanne and her extraordinary adventures that few women (then or now) dare to undertake!

Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson

Authors Walter Isaacson

>> more details..

Product Description
Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing.

At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, and when societies around the world are trying to build digital-age economies, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering.

Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing off-limits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and the innovative products that resulted.

Driven by demons, Jobs could drive those around him to fury and despair. But his personality and products were interrelated, just as Apple’s hardware and software tended to be, as if part of an integrated system. His tale is instructive and cautionary, filled with lessons about innovation, character, leadership, and values.

This is well written and similar to the recent "Endgame" Bobby Fischer bio from Frank Brady in that it does a fine dance of reportage and hero worship. There's not much I will recount that you won't already find plastered on the 60 minutes website, but there's plenty on Steve Jobs and B.O., chain smoking Marxists and some good interviews of some people at Apple you don't hear much from otherwise.

I want to know the answers for the following questions.
1) How did Jobs convince Woz to do all the tech work for him and still take a share of Woz's earnings (in 1974).
2) What really inspired him to go to India? Did that trip help him in making any important decisions later in life?
3) It is well known that Jobs is not a good programmer. How did he earn the respect of his fellow workers?
4) How did he become a millionaire in 5 years? How did he get the customers to buy all those bulky machines?
5) Was he really a shrewd man?
6) How did he get a Job in Atari without a college degree?

Steve Jobs has always projected a "larger than life" image because of the tremendous impact of his great products. But,Jobs had a strict regard for privacy of his personal life. We hardly knew the guy outside of his great business achievements.

Walter Isaacson has done a a great job in revealing the "real" Steve Jobs, warts and all.The life of Steve becomes more inspiring when you realize the great hurdles that he had to cross to go on to the remarkable things he has achieved.

I found this particularly unfair to students who strive to study from the most updated material, when in reality, it's not so updated. This year, many students had to pay almost $25 for a book containing only 3 new tests, when they thought the College Board was selling 10. The only major difference is that now, tests 3-10 have lots and lots of typos.

The book is new and cheap. It didn't take long for it to get delivered to my house.
I really like that is took me step by step on what to expect. Also there were 10 practice test, each of those practice test did help me improve. My kids used the SAT books published by the College Board and had gotten good results. They scored 790 and 800 in math. Despite of some typos in the latest edition, I still give it 5 stars. I don't believe that other publishers can come up with questions like the College Board. How can a copy be the same or better than the original?

The College Board is evil. However, we still need to give them our money and take the SAT if we want to go to a good school. So, to get a good score, you need to get this book. As it says on the cover, these are real questions by the people who actually write the test. Once you do a bunch of these, it becomes very predictable. It would be nice if they could give accurate scores at the end of the tests, instead of those ridiculous ranges, but whatever. Also, watch out for a bunch of "careless" mistakes throughout the book.
