How the CIA Kept America Safe and How Barack Obama Is Inviting the Next Attack

Courting Disaster: How the CIA Kept America Safe and How Barack Obama Is Inviting the Next Attack (Hardcover)

Authors Marc Thiessen

>> more details..

Product Description
White House speechwriter Marc Thiessen was locked in a secure room and given access to the most sensitive intelligence when he was tasked to write President George W. Bush’s 2006 speech explaining the CIA’s interrogation program and why Congress should authorize it. Few know more about these CIA operations than Thiessen, and in his new book, Courting Disaster, he documents just how effective the CIA’s interrogations were in foiling attacks on America, penetrating al-Qaeda’s high command, and providing our military with actionable intelligence. Thiessen also shows how reckless President Obama has been in shutting down the CIA’s program and releasing secret documents that have aided our enemies. Courting Disaster proves:

How the CIA program thwarted specific deadly attacks against the U.S.
Why “enhanced interrogation” was not torture by any reasonable legal or moral standard
How the information gained by “enhanced interrogation” could not have been acquired any other way
How President Obama’s actions since taking office have left America much more vulnerable to attack

In chilling detail, Thiessen reveals how close the terrorists came to striking again, how intelligence gained from “enhanced interrogation” repeatedly stymied their plots, and how President Obama’s dismantling of this CIA program is inviting disaster for America.

We should have gratitude for what these people have done. They have saved thousands of American lives. Thiessen shows how silly and totally off the mark claims are about torture and what really goes on in the interrogation program. Highly recommended.

Thiessen examines all the classified info leaked "drip by drip" over the years by government officials and the info the Obama Administration put out in the public domain last year. Really good read. Great insight into the other side of this debate-- namely that, there are many committed public servants in the CIA and other government agencies that are doing all they can to protect us from another 9/11.

Just Kids Patti Smith

Just Kids (Hardcover)

Authors Patti Smith

>> more details..

Product Description
Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe weren't always famous, but they always thought they would be. They found each other, adrift but determined, on the streets of New York City in the late '60s and made a pact to keep each other afloat until they found their voices--or the world was ready to hear them. Lovers first and then friends as Mapplethorpe discovered he was gay, they divided their dimes between art supplies and Coney Island hot dogs. Mapplethorpe was quicker to find his metier, with a Polaroid and then a Hasselblad, but Smith was the first to fame, transformed, to her friend's delight, from a poet into a rock star. (Mapplethorpe soon became famous too--and notorious--before his death from AIDS in 1989.) Smith's memoir of their friendship, Just Kids, is tender and artful, open-eyed but surprisingly decorous, with the oracular style familiar from her anthems like "Because the Night," "Gloria," and "Dancing Barefoot" balanced by her powers of observation and memory for everyday details like the price of automat sandwiches and the shabby, welcoming fellow bohemians of the Chelsea Hotel, among whose ranks these baby Rimbauds found their way. --Tom Nissley

Reviews Just Kids Patti Smith

She reveals herself as an innocent kid, coming from a simple, middle-class and loving home who braved the Big Apple for better or worse. It is a wonderful inside glimpse into Patti's metamorphosis, told with acceptance and love. Those who may have only heard Patti Smith perform as an outspoken tough-girl will marvel at the tender heart that beats inside that slender body. Those who know her better, recognize parts of ourselves. I loved this book!

While this is true of almost everyone from her generation, it is somehow shocking and bizarre to ponder. More interesting was that her first lover and partner in New York was none other than future photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. The bulk of "Just Kids" is Smith's recollection of Smith's early years in New York with Mapplethorpe and how they came to create their own image as artists and autuers and to craft their image and art. Again, it seems weird to think of either of them as being anything other than fully formed individuals, and that, in and of itself, seems supremely bizarre.

Turning the Country Around and Restoring Fiscal Responsibility

Comeback America: Turning the Country Around and Restoring Fiscal Responsibility (Hardcover)

Authors David M. Walker

>> more details..

Product Description
As comptroller general of the United States and head of the Government Accountability Office (GAO)—"the nation's top auditor"—Walker warned Congress and the administration as the federal surplus became a giant deficit under George W. Bush. As president and CEO of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, he now works full-time to raise public awareness regarding mounting debt burdens being imposed on future generations. Comeback America is his crucial manifesto, a way for President Obama to end out-of-control government spending and reform our tax, retirement, health care, defense, and other systems—before it's too late.

Walker believes that by 2030, absent significant reforms to current government programs and policies, federal taxes could double from current levels, meaning less money and poorer education for kids—which will hurt families along with our nation's economic strength and position in the world. If our foreign creditors—such as China—decide to buy fewer of our Treasury bonds, interest rates will rise and cars and homes will become less affordable.

But it doesn't have to be that way. Comeback America shows how we can return to our founding principles of fiscal responsibility and stewardship for future generations. The book includes bold ideas to control spending, save Social Security, dramatically alter Medicare, and simplify the tax code—all taking into account the Obama Administration's current efforts, which receive never-before-published assessments both complimentary and critical.

Nonpartisan, nonideological, and filled with a love of the country its esteemed author has spent his life serving, Comeback America is a book for anyone interested in America's economic future—in other words, a book everyone should read.

Reviews Turning the Country Around and Restoring Fiscal Responsibility

David Walker is an accountant by trade; a certified one. He also served as Comptroller General and head of the Government Accountability Office. This is a voice that should be heeded. Maybe Walker should run for President?

The deficit problem has two dimensions, as this book clearly explains. The current deficits and debt are bad enough, marking steady deterioration in the government's fiscal position over the past decade and exacerbated by the current recession. The long-term fiscal gap, fed by a steady increase in "entitlement" outlays (Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid), is worse. As of 9/30/09, the government (and by extension this country) was in a fiscal hole of some $63 trillion, a total of liabilities and unfunded promises so vast that it is hard to comprehend, which was "rising every second of every day."

Walker recommends starting the cure with Social Security. Its trust funds will run dry in 2037, and then require cutting benefit levels to 24% of current. He proposes to trim benefits for the middle and upper-income recipients (35% of retirees rely on Social Security for over 905 of their income), trim COLA increases, raise retirement ages, increase the cap on taxable Social Security wages, and require supplemental savings accounts totaling about 2-3% of payroll incomes.

Reviews Fear The Hunters Robert Kirkman

The story begins with a shocking murder from within the group, the introduction a new character who speaks the word of god but hides a terrible secret and that someone or something is watching them from the woods, following their every move. Vol 11 continues to build on the momentum from Vol 10 with enjoyable but sometimes shocking results. It was a pleasure to see Rick take charge again. He was back to his old from and returned to being the glue that holds everybody together. Rick's metal stability has been shaky as of late but he seems to have found the resolve needed, at least for now. "Fear the Hunters" sees Rick and co. face a type of menace that they haven't seen since they survived the terror of The Governor back in Vol 8.

The other reason to jump on the Walking Dead bus if you're new to the series is its status as the rarest of pop culture creatures: a source material that is probably going to wind up a ground-breaking TV show.

The Science of Near-Death Experiences

Evidence of the Afterlife: The Science of Near-Death Experiences (Hardcover)

Authors Paul Perry, Jeffrey Long

>> more details..

Product Description
Evidence of the Afterlife shares the firsthand accounts of people who have died and lived to tell about it. Through their work at the Near Death Experience Research Foundation, radiation oncologist Jeffrey Long and his wife, Jody, have gathered thousands of accounts of near-death experiences (NDEs) from all over the world. In addition to sharing the personal narrative of their experiences, visitors to the website are asked to fill out a one hundred–item questionnaire designed to isolate specific elements of the experience and to flag counterfeit accounts.

The website has become the largest NDE research database in the world, containing over 1,600 NDE accounts. The people whose stories are captured in the database span all age groups, races, and religious affiliations and come from all over the world, yet the similarities in their stories are as awe-inspiring as they are revealing. Using this treasure trove of data, Dr. Long explains how medical evidence fails to explain these reports and why there is only one plausible explanation—that people have survived death and traveled to another dimension.

Reviews The Science of Near-Death Experiences

Dr. Long asserts that there are 9 arguments that prove the existence of life after death. These arguments have been generated through the study of consistencies from the hundreds of NDE accounts that he's complied over the years. Some of these arguments include how: it can't be medically explained how people experience consciousness when they are clinically dead; blind people experiencing visual perceptions during their NDE (even though, blind people do not dream in visuals); children giving NDE details similar to adults, though they may have never been exposed to this concept; the "life review" experience tend to reflect real events. These arguments, along with the others, are the primary basis for Long's proof assertion.

Throughout the book, Long discusses each of these arguments, cites previous research from other scientists on this phenomenon that either compliments or refutes his claims, and justifies his arguments (including discussing some of the various scientific research methods). For me, the most convincing argument was from the visually impaired (blind) accounts, who for the most part had visually perceptive type of experiences. Stories from people who had never had an experience with sight, no perception of sight whatsoever and could account for some of the visuals that they perceived were remarkable. Another strong argument was how it could not be medically explained that people who were clinically dead, could have such a lucid consciousness, a consciousness which were described as more vivid than our normal day-to-day consciousness. Arguments against NDE have been that at death or near death, our subconscious mind takes over to put us into a dream-like state. But nonetheless, Long's argument here was very compelling. I considered all of the arguments to be definitely food-for-thought.

Most importantly, throughout the 9 arguments, Long discusses some of the personal stories of people who experienced the NDE phenomenon. To read these accounts was enlightening and inspirational. Whether individuals perceived themselves to be a "moral" or "immoral" person, the accounts mostly expressed peace, overwhelming love, and joy. Many expressed how these events changed their lives, in particular those who experienced scenes of their life unfold in front of them. These experiences seemed to give people a purpose.

A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage

Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage (Hardcover)

Authors Elizabeth Gilbert

>> more details..

Product Description
Elizabeth Gilbert fell in love with Felipe, a Brazilian-born man of Australian citizenship who’d been living in Indonesia when they met. Resettling in America, the couple swore eternal fidelity to each other, but also swore to never, ever, under any circumstances get legally married. (Both were survivors of previous horrific divorces. Enough said.) But providence intervened one day in the form of the United States government, which—after unexpectedly detaining Felipe at an American border crossing—gave the couple a choice: they could either get married, or Felipe would never be allowed to enter the country again. Having been effectively sentenced to wed, Gilbert tackled her fears of marriage by delving into this topic completely, trying with all her might to discover through historical research, interviews, and much personal reflection what this stubbornly enduring old institution actually is. Told with Gilbert’s trademark wit, intelligence and compassion, Committed attempts to “turn on all the lights” when it comes to matrimony, frankly examining questions of compatibility, infatuation, fidelity, family tradition, social expectations, divorce risks and humbling responsibilities. Gilbert’s memoir is ultimately a clear-eyed celebration of love with all the complexity and consequence that real love, in the real world, actually entails.

Reviews A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage

Some readers may not consider this work an adequate sequel to EPL for stylistic reasons - the storyline is simpler, the tone more somber, and the laughs rarer. But I'm not one of them. For me (and I can only speak for myself), EPL was a pleasure to read because it helped me learn more about myself and my relationship to relationships, which is precisely what "Committed" succeeds at doing. What could be more useful than a book that celebrates not only marriage, but the self inquiry and interpersonal work required to sustain one? For that matter, what could be more romantic?

As a final note, what is more important if not the subject of who we spend our lives with? Who we share our faith, time, children, money, and precious moments with? As a new mother who married five years ago at the age of 24 (I know this puts me into the danger zone :), this book has given me fuller understanding of what it means to be married and coming to respect my own marriage as an imperfect, changing, and totally lovable creature- much like my own baby son. (Quite simply, the white gown and endless talks about the church and reception hall didn't really matter- the chats we had about faith, child-rearing, navigating our political differences, and in-laws definitely mattered.) It has once been said that 'The unexamined life is not worth living.' Gilbert's book suggests that perhaps an unexamined marriage is not worth having- and I'd agree.

Reviews Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime

The day after Iowa, he phoned Kennedy and pressed for an endorsement, making the case for his wife. But Bill then went on, belittling Obama in a manner that deeply offended Kennedy. Recounting the conversation later to a friend, Teddy fumed that Clinton had said,' A few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee.' "

The McCain-Palin camp was afraid that Sarah Palin would screw things up because of the tremendous amount of information she needed to debate Biden. "The debate was going to be a debacle of historic and epic proportions...she was not focused...not engaged." She was not really participating in the prep, the authors add.

Sidebar:

In a recent news article Palin's spokeswoman, Meghan Stapleton, said in a statement: "The Governor's descriptions of these events are found in her book, 'Going Rogue.' Her descriptions are accurate. She was there. These reporters were not." Stapleton was talking about what was said about Palin in this book by the authors.

and then . . .

McCain aides confront Cindy McCain over reports that she had an extramarital affair.

The authors tell us that Hillary Clinton was so confident she would get the Democratic nomination that she had two top advisers planning her transition for after she won the general election.

They also point out that up until only days before the Republican Convention, Sen. John McCain was still thinking Sen. Joe Lieberman would be his running mate, until the "blowback" was so strong, they feared Lieberman would be rejected by the party, forcing the last-minute choice of Palin for the role.

Steve Schmidt, John McCain's former chief campaign strategist believes the Obama-Biden victory would have been even more lopsided without Palin on the Republican ticket, according to the book.

On John Edwards . . .

John Edwards went from being typically conceited to having megalomania. Women were always after him. He loved it and it fed his enormous ego. But it was also a problem for the campaign.

Edwards thought the contest would be between him and Hillary. The Clinton camp thought the same thing.

Edwards was normally warm to his staff. But he turned disdainful. He ignored and dismissed them. He even mistreated both staff and supporters. "You can't talk to people that way, "an aid told him after one of his displays. "People didn't like the new John Edwards."

Surprisingly, Elizabeth Edwards was fast to show John that she was his intellectual superior. She called him a "hick" in front of people and derided him for having "redneck parents." She called some staffers idiots. Her illness mellowed her in the early months of 2005 - but not for long.

While John's wife may have made him feel small, his new gal pal made him feel like a king. She told him that he had "the power to change the world," that "the people will follow you." She told him that he could be as great a leader as Gandhi or Martin Luther King Jr. She told him, "You're so real. You just need to get your staff out of your way." She reinforced everything he already believed about himself. She told him exactly what he wanted and needed to hear.

No one gets off free in the book. The authors tell us that Senate Majority Harry Reid (D-Nev.) had referred privately to Barack Obama early in his campaign as a "light-skinned" African American "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one."

I bought this review book based on the comments of others and for the most part I agree it is very helpful, however, the explanations they use to get you to understand how to do some of the math questions are just too simple and not easily expandable to the more complicated questions the GRE actually gives.
When they do provide more difficult examples they are not thoroughly explained and rely on information like "every know the square root of 169 is 13??" No kidding - see page 270. Other times they do not follow their own methodology in solving problems and some of their methods do not work on their own questions so they give you alternatives. How are you supposed to know when to use which?? Anyone's guess!

Sookie Stackhouse 8-copy Boxed Set (Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood) (Paperback)

This is a great boxed set at a very cheap price given that each individual book is set at $8 each. That aside, each book is able to attract the reader and right away is able to wrap you around this universe that Harris has created. Not a single one of these books were boring and each were entertaining and full of suspense. Each chapter leaves you hanging and wanting more.A bit of warning though, these books are a super-quick read.I was able to read the entire series in about a week and a half, their so entertaining you do not want to put the book down at all. Each character is unique, and not all are made out to be perfect. Each have their flaws and it sort of gives it a sense of reality. A thing that did annoy me a bit about Harris's writing style is her receptiveness in each and every book. And I do mean in every book. She tends to restate events and other things that the reader should know that have happened either in the same book or in past books. It personally got a bit annoying since to me, I think a reader should be able to recall such events since they were sometimes so prominent.
I started reading the books solely because I'm such a big fan of the tv series.Once I started reading the books,I found myself to be disappointed in the tv series because they had changed quite a bit.I try not to compare the two things so much since the books were only meant as a guide. You will still be surprised as to how events go in the first two books if you have seen the series.Overall,I think these books will not disappoint the readers and will not be able to put them down after their first read.

What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures (Hardcover)

What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures (Hardcover)

Authors Malcolm Gladwell

>> more details..

Product Description
What is the difference between choking and panicking? Why are there dozens of varieties of mustard-but only one variety of ketchup? What do football players teach us about how to hire teachers? What does hair dye tell us about the history of the 20th century?

In the past decade, Malcolm Gladwell has written three books that have radically changed how we understand our world and ourselves: The Tipping Point; Blink; and Outliers. Now, in What the Dog Saw, he brings together, for the first time, the best of his writing from TheNew Yorker over the same period.

Here is the bittersweet tale of the inventor of the birth control pill, and the dazzling inventions of the pasta sauce pioneer Howard Moscowitz. Gladwell sits with Ron Popeil, the king of the American kitchen, as he sells rotisserie ovens, and divines the secrets of Cesar Millan, the "dog whisperer" who can calm savage animals with the touch of his hand. He explores intelligence tests and ethnic profiling and "hindsight bias" and why it was that everyone in Silicon Valley once tripped over themselves to hire the same college graduate.

"Good writing," Gladwell says in his preface, "does not succeed or fail on the strength of its ability to persuade. It succeeds or fails on the strength of its ability to engage you, to make you think, to give you a glimpse into someone else's head."What the Dog Saw is yet another example of the buoyant spirit and unflagging curiosity that have made Malcolm Gladwell our most brilliant investigator of the hidden extraordinary.

Reviews What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures (Hardcover)

WHAT THE DOG SAW is another collection of articles astutely written by Malcolm Gladwell, columnist for the New Yorkers and best-selling author of TIPPING POINT, BLINK, and OUTLIERS.

No one juxtaposes events or topics like Gladwell. He takes two apparently-unrelated topics and finds that weird intersection where they collide. He makes sense of the universe in a quirky, unconventional way which is invariably insightful, funny, and thoughtful.

In WHAT THE DOG SAW the reader is treated to a comparison and contrast of bomber pilots and mammograms, the secrets of marketing hair color and postwar America, plagiarism and creativity.

In addition, he is sometimes simply riveting. Writing about Cesar Millan and his gift of understanding dogs, Gladwell is beautiful, artistic and insightful. His essay on Enron did the impossible, brought into doubt the indubitable; the guilt of Enron and its officers. He writes powerfully, painstakingly and impartially about homelessness and the price of public programs.

He thinks critically, writes boldly, and muses wisely. Gladwell is smart. And thoughtful. And so is the reader for simply having read his stuff.
