The Laws Penguin Classics

The Laws (Penguin Classics)

Authors Plato, Trevor J. Saunders (Editor, Translator, Introduction), Richard Stalley (Preface)

>> more details..

Product Description
In The Laws, Plato describes in fascinating detail a comprehensive system of legislation in a small agricultural utopia he named Magnesia. His laws not only govern crime and punishment but also form a code of conduct for all aspects of life in his ideal state—from education, sports, and religion to sexual behavior, marriage, and drinking parties. Plato sets out a plan for the day-to-day rule of Magnesia, administered by citizens and elected officials, with supreme power held by a Council. Although Plato’s views that citizens should act in complete obedience to the law have been read as totalitarian, The Laws nonetheless constitutes a highly impressive program for the reform of society and provides a crucial insight into the mind of one of classical Greece’s foremost thinkers.

Plato believed in reincarnation and the law of karma. For example he felt that the death penalty is a blessing in disguise for incorrigible criminals since it prevents them from contaminating their souls with even more evil.

Atlantis was a utopian society at first and it seems that for all of his life Plato was trying to recreate this ideal society. But I doubt that he could have imagined the information that came out in the 1900s from the great Edgar Cayce (Osiris). Sometimes when people see flying saucers those are our ancestors from Atlantis travelling through time.

I feel this book shows the influence of two things that were very important for Plato; his belief in Atlantis and the books in the old testament of the bible that talk about the details of those laws that were given from on high. These two things were always there deep in his thoughts.

It is not a coincidence that fate chose Plato to preserve the legend of Atlantis for future generations. He was there on Atlantis himself at the very beginning.

Certainly they were standing up for their opinions and beliefs and of course they understood (and supported) the fact that not everyone would agree with their proposals, but something that we have today that they couldn't experience is hindsight. The fears of a civil war for the reasons articulated came true almost to the number, the reasons why and how and what the ultimate end-result would probably be. The warnings against abusive state and federal governments have, time and again, been bled out with remarkably accurate assumption.

I am amazed at how relative it is to the argument today of the Constitution being abused. The writers of The Federalist Papers were exceptional men who truly cared about Personal Liberty, States Rights and the role of The Federal Government. An insight I will appreciate always! This version works well for students, and I purchased it after already owning a small paperback copy. This particular book has bright paper, strong enough for taking excessive notes, and the margins are sufficiently large. I am also finding the larger page sizes are helpful, and I can see more content without flipping back and forth so often.

Switch How to Change Things When Change Is Hard

Switch: How to Change Things When Change Is Hard [Audiobook, Unabridged] [Audio CD]

Authors Chip Heath, Dan Heath (Author)

>> more details..

Product Description
The primary obstacle is a conflict that’s built into our brains, say Chip and Dan Heath, authors of the critically acclaimed bestseller Made to Stick. Psychologists have discovered that our minds are ruled by two different systems—the rational mind and the emotional mind—that compete for control. The rational mind wants a great beach body; the emotional mind wants that Oreo cookie. The rational mind wants to change something at work; the emotional mind loves the comfort of the existing routine. This tension can doom a change effort—but if it is overcome, change can come quickly.

They are passionate and it shows through their clear writing and well researched book. They direct readers to simple (but not easy) steps to improve and change whatever it is that needs change. The book will give you insight into how to change things whether they are in your work, family, or personal life. Like their previous brilliant book, "Made to Stick", they boil down their advice to steps that can be quickly remembered and thus considered. In "Switch" they advise readers to consider three elements for change. The three factors are the "Rider" which is the rational side of individuals. Second is the emotional "elephant" and finally you have to "clear the path" for the change to succeed.

The book is filled with story after story illustrating the concepts. I found it refreshing that the book presents new stories. It seems that so many modern business book rehash stories already told in other books. These authors are clearly involved in multiple organizations and have contacts that allow them to gain insights others have not seen before - or at least insights that have not before been collected into one pair of minds.

My favorite section of the book was the Direct the Rider section. I found the concepts clear and have a better idea of how I can find the bright spots (what's working), script the critical moves (provide clarity of expectations) and point to the destination (establish an end goal).

The Communist Manifesto

The Communist Manifesto (Oxford World's Classics)

Authors Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, David McLellan (Editor)

>> more details..

Product Description
Critically and textually up-to-date, this new edition of the classic translation (Samuel Moore, 1888) features an introduction and notes by the eminent Marx scholar David McLellan, prefaces written by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels subsequent to the original 1848 publication, and corrections of errors made in earlier versions. Regarded as one of the most influential political tracts ever written, The Communist Manifesto serves as the foundation document of the Marxist movement. This summary of the Marxist vision is an incisive account of the world-view Marx and Engels had evolved during their hectic intellectual and political collaboration of the previous few years.

I find myself conflicted over its contents, just as I always find myself conflicted in reading Marx. Marx's analyses of the dynamics governing capitalist society have always struck me as dead on. No one writes more presciently or timelessly about the structures of exploitation that are inherent in capitalism. Nonetheless, I find his positive proposals as to how to transcend capitalism to be untenable, and the post-capitalist world he describes to be undesirable. The best way to express this is that I find Marx the critic to be convincing and impressive, but Marx the visionary to be irrelevant. Marx wrote at a time when the only democratic country in Europe was France. England, Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire all had limited franchises and Russia was of course an autocracy. One of the major reforms he battled for was the introduction of democracy. It was his belief that the implementation of his program would flow from that.

This is more than an economics book it is a way of life. It sounds good on paper but makes many assumptions. Instead of worrying about workability, look at the logic that is built on assumptions of that time (written, in 1848). Add this to your library.

After giving birth to a daughter she names Pearl , Hester is punished with the scarlet letter "A" which she must wear on her breast and marks her as an adulteress. The shame she bears is immense. The village looks upon her with scorn and ridicule. Her husband, Roger Chillingsworth, whom Hester had presumed dead at sea, sent her to Salem, Massachusetts two years previously to await his later arrival, but sent no word after. He appears unexpectedly as she is being publicly displayed upon the scaffolding in front of the church, which serves as a punishment for criminals.

We were uncomfortable enough to have our male English teacher address the topics of this book! All that aside, though, the book is a timeless classic and I hope that it is still on the high school curriculum reading lists across the country. It gives us all something to think about and it does teach us, indirectly perhaps, how to deal with the fall-out of our actions and choices. I have a feeling that a lot of the reviewers expressing negative opinions are malcontent high school students grumbling about a "stupid, boring book" assigned to them for class. I myself had to read it for my junior-year English class, but I am very glad I was forced to do so.

The story itself is very powerful, but to modern readers it is often perceived as being dense and overcrowded with details. This is typical to Victorian novels, in which the women are always tender and caring and the men brave and intelligent. It seems that these conclusions have to be underlined on every page of the book. Still Bram Stoker succeeds in winning the attention of the reader by supplying an unprecedented richness to the story. The plot is filled with unexpected twists, remarkable action sequences and rather eerie -sometimes almost erotic- confrontations with evil entities. No situation is left unused to heighten the mystery.

It becomes almost a crash course in symbolism, to discover the events as they coincide with the gradual effects of Dracula's presence in London. What Stoker does is a lot similar--and far more effective in its respective medium--to what was achieved in the Blair Witch Project. We see subtle effects and character responses that all point to the villain, but the villain is always just beyond reach, never quite tangible, and more the frightening because of it. In this way, the novel instantly propels itself to one of the greatest horror novels of all time.

"Dracula" is the grandaddy is Lestat and Jean-Claude, but that isn't the sole reason why it is a classic. It's also incredibly atmospheric, and very well-written. Not only is it very freaky, in an ornate Victorian style, but it is also full of restrained, quiet horror and creepy eroticism. What's more, it's shaped the portrayal of vampires in movies and books, even to this day.

Likewise for the Verbal section, you will learn techniques to identify the type of question, how to quickly deconstruct the question, and most importantly how to answer exactly what the examiners expect.

I also find the writing techniques to be very helpful to ensure at the essays will end up above average. The only way to score a "6" is to keep practicing and learn from good styles of writing.

The only downside was the DVD - video summarizing the preparation and examination experience, but nothing more than that. Get the version without DVD Cracking the New GRE, 2012 Edition (Graduate School Test Preparation) to save some money.

What I liked about it:
--The amount of explanation was perfect - concise enough that I could read the book cover to cover.
--I found that the test-taking strategies given for the verbal, math, and writing sections were all very helpful, and during the actual test I found myself using them several times.
--I thought the practice tests were about the same level of difficulty as the actual test.

The Princeton Review highly enough... Its methods and explanations are quicker, simpler, and significantly more helpful than Kaplan's. Note: I did read The Princeton Review first, which I'm sure colored my opinion. However, after studying the PR publication, I felt that Kaplan's instructions and advice were not only unhelpful, they actually made the test more complicated than it needed to be. Kaplan's book has more practice drills/tests, but P.R. has more than enough of these, and it uses its pages more effectively (in my opinion), explaining methods/instructions that make the test feel simple and doable.
So if you're considering one or the other, this would be my choice hands down; it does the job thoroughly and effectively, and (bonus) it's less expensive.

Official LSAT PrepTests

10 New Actual, Official LSAT PrepTests

Authors Wendy Margolis

>> more details..

Product Description
This is a great book. But don't start here. Because this book has 10 very recent official LSATs, you want to take all these tests timed before you take the official test, but not before you take some older tests first. For example, I'd suggest getting The Next 10 Actual, Official LSAT PrepTests (Lsat Series), which has PrepTests 29-38, and take those. Also, get the individual PrepTests 39-51 (for example, The Official LSAT PrepTest 51). Basically, you want to take older tests before you take newer tests because the newer tests are harder. Learn the fundamentals on the old tests so you don't "waste" the newer ones until you're ready to take them.

As a self-studier readying myself for the LSAT, saving $50 to $60 by purchasing this book as opposed to the individual preptests represents a significant boon. Now, I can put additional money towards other preparation essentials. Hopefully LSAC publishes a fifth "10" book at some point with some tougher-to-find tests to provide broke prospective law students with one less financial burden. I find that many LSAT books out there choose to make up their own questions rather than pay the licensing fee to the Law School Admissions Council to use real questions. However, this practice leaves students woefully unprepared. I can't emphasize enough how important it is to study from REAL LSAT questions, which are exactly what this book provides. I recommend these exams to all of my students.

Right now, I'm very satisfied with the purchase. I've found the "Kaplan strategies" helpful and as I complete more practice sets, I get less wrong answers. This book also gives you lots of study tips for before taking the test and advice on actually taking the test.

In addition to the textbook, you get an online registration number which allows you to access 5 additional full-length practice tests (in addition to the full-length paper-based practice test) and the CD-ROM companion. The CD companion has 10 practice sets for each of the quantitative and verbal reasoning sections as well as 5 analytical essay prompts. After you finish a practice set (either on the book or the CD), you get an explanation for all the answers to clarify doubts. The explanations Kaplan gives are detailed, well-written, unlike the ones I've seen in the examples provided in the ETS website which don't always clarify the answers for me. With your Kaplan online companion account, in addition to the 5 practice tests, I've been able to get a couple more full-length practice tests for free, as well as access to free events and a GRE Live Online session.

Here is how I studied:
1. I chose this book as well as CliffsNotes Math Review for Standardized Tests (Cliffs Test Prep Math Review Standardized). I did not feel I needed extra prep materials for the verbal portion.
2. I worked through this book, including the practice test in the book, and all the in-book excercises.
3. I downloaded and took the free ETS test as a baseline. I also downloaded and studied their free math review materials.
4. Based on step one, I reviewed my options here on Amazon for supplemental study materials, and decided I wanted about two months to study. Any more than that, and I think you run the risk of overcompensating and second-guessing yourself too much.
5. I worked through the CD of included practice exercises with the Kaplan book. These were very helpful, although I must caution you to take answers and results with a grain of salt. I felt that they often contained typos, and also that the verbal questions were often ill-conceived or explained strangely. So think of them as "practice" and don't get too worked up if you get answers wrong when you felt they should be right. Based on my verbal score estimate, I feel I am justified in making this statement.
6. The day before the test, I took one final practice test from the online tests available when you purchase this book.
7. I worked through the Cliff's Notes book; due to my ineptitude at math I worked through the entire book but if you are good at math, that would of course be unnecessary.
8. I worked through these much more quickly than I expected, so I also purchased, after about three weeks of study, Barron's New GRE Flash Cards, 2nd Edition and Gruber's Complete GRE Guide 2012. They were both useful although I did spend more time with the Kaplan book and the Cliff's Notes book.
9. I took a practice exam every couple of weeks. This was more to get used to sitting a 4-hour exam than anything else, and that was helpful as an exercise in endurance.

*ONE-OF-A-KIND RANKING LISTS that reveal the top 20 colleges in 62 categories based on how students rated their school's dorms, professors, food, athletic facilities, and financial aid

*BONUS FEATURES like the "100 Best Value Colleges List," plus unique ratings with all 376 schools scored on Financial Aid, Quality of Life, Fire Safety, Green Ratings, and more.

Product Details
For students:
1. Work hard to get good grades and good test scores. They are important both for getting in to colleges and getting financial aid from them. Take as many AP courses as you can. Admissions officers like to see you've taken challenging courses, plus high scores on AP exams can earn college credits, thus saving on tuition.

2. When winnowing your hit list of colleges, don't make the mistake of picking schools only by their academic reputations. Get information about the campus culture, the student body, the town, the majors offered.

3. Never cross a school off your list because of its sticker price. More than 70% of students get financial aid and with aid it can cost less to go to a private or expensive school than a public or inexpensive one.

For parents:
1. Relax. There are hundreds of great colleges out there and the majority of students get into their first or second choice college. Be as supportive as you can of your child, and when it comes to dealing with the schools, let your child make the calls and write the letters, etc.

2. If you are hoping to get financial aid, learn all you can about the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) well before you begin filling it out, ideally months before. The FAFSA is a form all aid applicants must submit and your /your child's answers on it are used to determine your "EFC" (Estimated Family Contribution) – that's what the colleges will expect you "pay" out of the family coffer. Our annual book, Paying For College Without Going Broke, has detailed information on this and is the only annual guide that gives people line-by-line advice specifically on completing the upcoming year's FAFSA form.

The best feature of this guide remains the 2 page layout for each of the colleges, with in-depth information on campus life, academic selectivity (the number of applicants, how many were accepted, and of those how many actually decided to attend), up-to-date tuition and room/board costs (I checked the numbers of the college that my daughter is now attending, and they are accurate), etc. Another aspect that is very helpful is the "Survey says" sidebar, in which the essence of the university is distilled from the college students themselves, and "The Inside Word" segment on how tough it really is to gain admission when all is said and done.

This book is very helpful and serves its purpose. The only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars is because I wanted to see each individual schools ranking. It did have the top 50 public and private schools in no particular number order just alphabetical. But I would recommend it to those looking for more information on a college they would like to attend or those just looking for information on a college. The book has feedback from students and is accurate.

The other strength of this book is it draws attention to the strong financial aid programs of most private colleges. Few parents or high school students know that the average student loan debt of a Princeton graduate is LOWER than the average student loan debt of a graduate from the typical "Big State University". The fact is, for high school students ranking in the "Top 10%" of their high school graduating class and scoring in the top 10% of the nation on the SAT test and the ACT test, hundreds of private colleges will provide scholarships and grants that make the "net" cost of a private school education less than that of a typical public university. And, many private colleges make a commitment to meet the financial aid needs of EVERY student they enroll.

CRACKING THE TOEFL iBT 2012 EDITION comes with audio exercises on CD and proven techniques that include a full-length, simulated TOEFL iBT, strategies for all sects, and keys to improving essay skills. If it's on the test, it's in the book; any TOEFL learner taking the test will score higher studying this clear guide to achievement. I 10 in the overall score compared with my better one. (I took the toefl 4 times). I think it was very useful, and when I did the test, I only had read the three first core chapters. I still do not know the score after read all the book, but in any case, it explain how to prepare the exam and what ETS waits you to do.

This book is excellent for basic strategies for all standardized tests, and great iBT specific strategies. I used this book to teach a TOEFL preparation class. I used this book for the first portion on how to use strategies to conquor the exam, but I wish it had more examples. I had to use a separate book to provide my students with more examples.

The comparisons with C programming annoying in the first part of the book. The author continuously goes on about "if you're a C programmer" and then some comparison to C. I didn't find this helpful (and I am a C programmer) and I think it could have been safely left out. A good example of this is on page 12 where is says "Matrices are indexed using double subscripting, much as in C/C++, although subscripts start from 1 instead of 0." So pretty much not like C/C++. That's a good example of how the C interludes don't help the new reader.

Just occasionally the author gets ahead of himself. Early on in the book he introduces matrices and on page 28 does a matrix addition in the form m + 10:13. He hasn't explained how that addition is going to work.

There are lots of free R tutorials out there, among which, "The R Inferno" by Patrick Burns is my favorite. The Art of R Programming, however, covers much more grounds in much greater depth. In addition to standard data structure such as vector and matrix, the book discusses lists, data frames and factors in more detail than I have found in almost all other R books. In programming part, the discussion of R's powerful lexical scope is very thorough. It even has examples of using recursion to do quicksort and build binary trees. The book also covers S3 and S4 object models well. Two other topics you do not usually find are string manipulation and debugging. The book reflects state of art of R programming with a chapter dedicated to parallel computing in R. The recently introduced R byte complier is also discussed.

Takis Metaxas, Wellesley College "This is the most approachable book on algorithms I have." -- Megan Squire, Elon University, USA This newly expanded and updated second edition of the best-selling classic continues to take the "mystery" out of designing algorithms, and analyzing their efficacy and efficiency. Expanding on the first edition, the book now serves as the primary textbook of choice for algorithm design courses while maintaining its status as the premier practical reference guide to algorithms for programmers, researchers, and students. The reader-friendly Algorithm Design Manual provides straightforward access to combinatorial algorithms technology, stressing design over analysis. The first part, Techniques, provides accessible instruction on methods for designing and analyzing computer algorithms. The second part, Resources, is intended for browsing and reference, and comprises the catalog of algorithmic resources, implementations and an extensive bibliography. NEW to the second edition: • Doubles the tutorial material and exercises over the first edition • Provides full online support for lecturers, and a completely updated and improved website component with lecture slides, audio and video • Contains a unique catalog identifying the 75 algorithmic problems that arise most often in practice, leading the reader down the right path to solve them • Includes several NEW "war stories" relating experiences from real-world applications • Provides up-to-date links leading to the very best algorithm implementations available in C, C++, and Java ADDITIONAL Learning Tools: • Exercises include "job interview problems" from major software companies • Highlighted take-home lesson boxes emphasize essential concepts • Provides comprehensive references to both survey articles and the primary literature • Exercises points to relevant programming contest challenge problems • Many algorithms presented with actual code (written in C) as well as pseudo-code • A full set of lecture slides and additional material available at www.algorist.com Written by a well-known algorithms researcher who received the IEEE Computer Science and Engineering Teaching Award, this new edition of The Algorithm Design Manual is an essential learning tool for students needing a solid grounding in algorithms, as well as a special text/reference for professionals who need an authoritative and insightful guide. Professor Skiena is also author of the popular Springer text, Programming Challenges: The Programming Contest Training Manual.

Student Guide Maxwell Equations

A Student's Guide to Maxwell's Equations

Authors Daniel Fleisch

>> more details..

Product Description
Gauss's law for electric fields, Gauss's law for magnetic fields, Faraday's law, and the Ampere-Maxwell law are four of the most influential equations in science. In this guide for students, each equation is the subject of an entire chapter, with detailed, plain-language explanations of the physical meaning of each symbol in the equation, for both the integral and differential forms. The final chapter shows how Maxwell's equations may be combined to produce the wave equation, the basis for the electromagnetic theory of light. This book is a wonderful resource for undergraduate and graduate courses in electromagnetism and electromagnetics. A website hosted by the author at www.cambridge.org/9780521701471 contains interactive solutions to every problem in the text as well as audio podcasts to walk students through each chapter.

The focus of this text is to introduce the physics and not to focus on or distract the reader with unnecessary mathematics. It contains just enough of the mathematics to understand the concepts, but unlike layman books on physics that often skimp on the mathematics, this book does not attempt to omit any that is required to understand the physics. The reader will be well prepared for a more in depth, and mathematically thorough treatment after covering this material.

Finally, a physics book that does not apologize for having math in it. In a simple manner, the author takes each equation apart and explains every squiggle, dot, and delta and how they relate to each other. With only a high school diploma I was able to understand what was happening in the application of these basic equations. Thank you for taking the time to explain them rather than telling me that I am just too dumb to understand.

It is always difficult for 3-semester or 4-quarter courses to decide on a sequence of topics. Anton's choices in the fifth edition are different from what I would prefer, but they are acceptable to many programs. Regardless, he is again strong on the many ways he encourages and develops his readers' intuitive understanding of fundamental calculus ideas. My own students have actually come to believe that they can READ a calculus text because of Howard Anton. This book covers all topics of calculus in an user friendly manner. Illustrations are great. Explanations are lucid. Very good for all high school students. Even if you already know calculus, it a very good book for revising your knowledge. However, this book is quite expensive. I have tried reading several Calculus books and have found them to be either too vague and/or not analytical enough from a student's point of view. But with Howard Anton's Calculus books, especially if used in conjunction with the Comapnion books, learning calculus becomes very imformative and fun. This book helped me get A's in Calculus 1 and 2.

First i want to say that I love the 5 steps to a 5 series, but this book disappointed me. I feel like this book was strained a lot and they did not include the same level of detail into explaining the math like in the other books. This book isn't completely useless though. Contains plenty of AP quality problems to practice on and 3 full test to practice with step by step explanations. This book was highly recommended by my daughter's AP class teacher and her feedback has been positive. Everything was received on-time and as advertised.

I was new to ArcGIS before reading this book, it's a complex and powerful program.

my backgroung is in the mechanical field (UniGraphics and AutoCAD). Our department staf has been reduced due to the econemy so our CAD group started picking up the GIS work. It takes a bit of time to grasp the consept and the interface of GIS.This manual has been a grate tool to help me find out some of tricks to make learning this program easier. The book is geared for most people who have a working knowlage of this program. It is very well illustrated and is easy to follow for the beginer or even mid-level users.

Pursuit to learn Spanish. 3 of them if you can afford it.

1. Lights, Camera, Spanish (Book + DVD): Learn Conversational Spanish by Watching a Romantic Adventure This is actually a 90 minute movie for Spanish-language learners. It gives the option to watch the movie with subtitles but I'd recommend not using them to improve your Spanish. This "movie" also includes a workbook so that you can reinforce the Spanish vocabulary words and phrases from the film. The workbook also has lots of exercises to keep you engaged in the film. But be prepared to hear Chilean accents. Although pleasant to the ear, the accents from Chile are very different from most Latin American accents.

2. Verbarrator Version 1.1 (Windows Version) This software replaces the traditional verb conjugation books and makes learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs an interactive and fun activity. This should be a required resource for anyone who wants to improve their ability to conjugate Spanish verbs. Especially anyone who is challenged by the drudgery of learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs and who is looking for a new way to make learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs an easy and fun activity

3. Diccionario esencial de la lengua espanola de la Real Academia Espanola (Spanish Edition) If you are really serious about speaking the language fluently, then at some point you will need to replace your Spanish-English dictionary and get a pure Spanish dictionary with both the vocabulary words and the definitions entirely in Spanish. I use this one mainly because it was highly-recommended by a friend from Spain who teaches Spanish. According to him, this is the "standard" among university level Spanish professors.

Ideal for beginners, the lessons walk through some of the key building blocks of Spanish grammar, such as how to conjugate common verbs in the present tense, when to use the verbs "ser" and "estar" as well as covering many adjectives, pronouns and other essential parts of sentence structure. Having a concrete understanding of these elements will give you confidence as you progress through your Spanish learning experience.

There is plenty of everyday vocabulary presented in the lessons, covering clothing, family, animals, food and drink, days of the week, emotions and other basic topics that are good for new students. Some of the verbs covered are also the most commonly used, for example "hacer", "poder" and "saber". Combined, the book presents a strong basic introduction to Spanish grammar and the language in general. A clear index lets you find and revise specific topics and grammar elements as needed

I realized that we should have purchased the learning Spanish book for both the English and Spanish speakers because the book to learn English is only written in English, therefore, if you do not know English, you cannot use the book without someone with knowledge of English. I figured the publisher does not have it in both English and Spanish because the book is for any person who wants to learn English regardless of their native language.
